A pattern I am never without in the winter months is a buzzer. This particular pattern has taken a number of fish for my clients and I when fishing Highland Lodge. It has accounted for some very large fish, the biggest being a 9 ½ pound hen from Bernard’s Lake. I fish it in conjunction with a large dragon or a bloodworm when static nymphing with a long leader up to 18 foot in length combined with an indicator. Fish around channels and weed beds it is very effective. We fish it quiet large at times up to a size 8.
It is a simple pattern to tie and the only advice I can give you is to keep it as slim as possible.
Hook: Buzzer hook # 14-8
Thread: Black 8/0.
Gill: A small tuft of white marabou pinched short.
Abdomen: Black V rib.
Ribbing: Red Holographic Flashabou.
Legs: Black rabbit dubbing teased out.
Thorax: Peacock herl.
Step 1
Lay a thread foundation and tie in a small pinch of white marabou.
Tie in a length of red Holographic Flashabou and black V rib.
Step 2
x
Advance the thread forward keeping the under body slim and smooth.
Wind the V rib forward leaving small gaps to accommodate the ribbing. Tie of the V rib and trim excess.
Step 3
x
Wind the red Holographic tinsel forward and it will automatically slot into the gaps. Tie off.
Step 4
Apply some black dubbing and wind forward burying the bulk created by the V rib. Tease out the dubbing on the underside.
Step 5
x
Cut two orange goose biots and trim them at their butt ends at an angle. Tie them in on the sides slanting slightly downwards.
Step 6
Tie in two to three strands of peacock herl in and wind forward to complete the thorax and trim excess and whip finish.
This pattern can be tied in different colours such as all red, claret, olive, tan or rusty brown. I have found the black colour in various sizes to be the most effective.
When fishing waters with large trout rather use heavy wire scud hooks as the bigger fish will straighten the fine wire hooks in the weeds.
Good luck this winter.
