Phongola & Assegai
Horst reports that he is having a very good winter season, especially on the Phongola which is running well this winter. Also, what is pleasing is that the illegal netting has dropped off, possibly because he had confiscated a large number of nets previously. The Assegai remains dirty and polluted below Piet Retief but most of the fishing is done upstream and in the tributaries. Horst uses long leaders, up to 18ft, without indicator using mainly caddis patterns

Tugela System.

Carl Freese of Tugela Fishing Company (083 2260810) guides in the area reports that the Berg rivers are still looking good but there has been little yellowfishing of late as they are into the hunting season. With regard to the middle Tugela this is now starting to clear below the Spioenkop Dam.

Southern KZN:

Karl Adensgaard (082 4558818) says that the Umkomaas River is flowing really well and is clear and even though they are into winter fly fishers were still able to catch yellows in the fast water 2 weeks ago.
